The Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) is a vast area of the Pacific Ocean, located between the Clarion and Clipperton Fracture Zones. It spans about 4.5 million square kilometers and is known for its deep-sea ecosystems and significant deposits of polymetallic nodules. These nodules contain valuable metals like nickel, copper, cobalt, and rare earth elements.
The International Seabed Authority (ISA) is responsible for regulating mineral-related activities in the international seabed area, including issuing licenses to any country or corporation for exploration and mining activities at certain portions of the sea.
The ISA also aims to provide equitable benefits for all countries by implementing the Foster Cooperation Policy where countries/corporations must collaborate with third world countries who are part of the ISA and provide minimum reserve areas of the CCZ (i.e. Jamaica, Nauru, Kiribati, Tonga)
